Beyond the Khilji Dynasty: Revisiting the Magic of Alibaba Aur 40 Chor (2004)
When Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat brought Alauddin Khilji to life with Ranveer Singh’s manic energy, a generation of Indian television fans smiled knowingly. For them, the definitive Khilji—the cunning, treasure-hungry, and ruthless villain—was not in a cinema hall but on their Sahara One television screens. He was the formidable antagonist of the 2004 fantasy adventure series: Alibaba Aur 40 Chor.
The Premise: The story follows Alibaba, an honest woodcutter who accidentally discovers the magical password ("Khul Ja Sim Sim") to a cave filled with the loot of forty thieves. His greedy brother Kasim tries to take more than he should and is killed. After rescuing the enslaved Marjeena (the clever slave girl), Alibaba must fight the remaining thieves. alibaba aur 40 chor 2004
The story is set in the modern-day Indian village of Sonapur, which is being terrorized by a ruthless bandit named Zakali (played by Tej Sapru) and his gang of 40 thieves. Beyond the Khilji Dynasty: Revisiting the Magic of
Ali Asgar as Alibaba: Before he became the beloved Komedians ki Maa (Dadi) on The Kapil Sharma Show, Ali Asgar was the earnest, righteous hero. His Alibaba wasn't just a lucky thief; he was a man torn between poverty and morality. Asgar brought a grounded vulnerability to the role, making the character relatable despite the flying carpets and genies.
Hiten Tejwani as Iblis/Kasim: Wait—Hiten Tejwani? The same gentleman who played the soft-hearted Karan Virani in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi? Yes. In a shocking piece of casting that worked brilliantly, Hiten played the dual role of Kasim (Alibaba’s greedy brother) and the arch-demon Iblis. Stripping off his boy-next-door image, Tejwani delivered a menacing, almost Shakespearean villain.
Mukesh Khanna as the Chief of Robbers: Fresh off his iconic stint as Shaktimaan and Bhishma Pitamah, Mukesh Khanna brought gravitas to the leader of the forty thieves. However, he was not the main villain.
Pankaj Dheer as Alauddin Khilji: This was the showstopper. Pankaj Dheer, famous for playing Karna in Mahabharat, played a cunning, scheming Sultan. His Khilji was obsessed with the magical treasure hidden in the cave, turning the simple folk tale into a high-stakes political war.
