Helmet is an American alternative metal band formed in New York City in 1989 by guitarist/vocalist Page Hamilton after his departure from the jazz/rock group Band of Susans. Known for their precise, staccato riffs, unconventional time signatures, and a blend of hardcore, alternative rock, and metal, Helmet influenced 1990s heavy music including post-hardcore and nu-metal acts. Their sound features drop-tuned guitars, palm-muted syncopation, and terse, shouted vocals.
