Understanding Ldp.exe: The LDAP Directory Browser Tool
What is Ldp.exe?
Ldp.exe (LDAP Directory Browser) is a legitimate, built-in Microsoft Windows utility used for performing Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) queries against Active Directory or other LDAP-compatible directory services. It provides a graphical user interface (GUI) to connect, bind, search, modify, add, and delete objects within a directory.
3. View a User Object
- Go to the View menu and click Tree...
- Enter the BaseDN (e.g.,
DC=yourcompany,DC=com) or leave it blank and select your domain from the dropdown. - Navigate the tree structure on the left pane until you find a user.
- Double-click the user. The right pane will populate with every attribute associated with that user, including encoded values for things like passwords and GUIDs.
- Bind as currently logged on user (default).
- Simple bind – enter a distinguished name (e.g.,
CN=Administrator,CN=Users,DC=domain,DC=local) and password. - Negotiate/Kerberos – for secure domain authentication.
Leave the BaseDN blank to see the entire directory or enter a specific path. The left-hand pane will now show the directory structure. ⚠️ Safety Warning ldp.exe download microsoft
