Wellness Is for Every Body

You do not need to wait until you love your body to start treating it well. You don’t need to be thin to be healthy. You don’t need to be able-bodied to practice wellness. You don’t need to earn rest, food, or joy.

  • Find a Health at Every Size (HAES) practitioner. These providers focus on health behaviors (blood pressure, blood sugar, mobility, mental health) rather than the number on the scale.
  • Come prepared. If you need to weigh in, ask to do it backwards (so you don't see the number) or request a blind weight.
  • Ask the question: "If I were a thin person with these exact symptoms, what would your treatment plan be?"
  1. Societal pressure: The pervasive cultural emphasis on physical appearance and beauty standards can make it difficult for individuals to adopt a body-positive approach to health.
  2. Lack of diversity: The wellness industry has been criticized for its lack of diversity and inclusivity, with many programs and services catering to a narrow range of body types and abilities.

Historically, the wellness industry has weaponized shame as a motivational tool. Diet culture profits by convincing people that their bodies are problems to be solved. This approach is not only psychologically damaging, leading to disordered eating and poor self-image, but it is also physiologically counterproductive. Chronic stress from self-loathing elevates cortisol levels, negating the benefits of a green juice or a morning run. Body positivity serves as the necessary antidote to this toxicity. By promoting the acceptance of all bodies regardless of size, shape, or ability, it dismantles the idea that you must hate your body to change it. When an individual stops viewing their body as an enemy, they create the psychological safety needed to listen to its actual needs—hunger cues, fatigue, and emotional distress.
