Scope and applicability
- Applies to the construction, renovation, change of use, demolition, occupancy, and maintenance of buildings in Ontario, subject to statutory exclusions (e.g., certain farm buildings, temporary structures, some minor repairs).
- Applies to architects, engineers, designers, builders, contractors, municipal building officials, and owners where regulated by the Building Code Act, 1992.

8. Transition Rules and Grandfathering
- Permits applied before mandatory date: Can proceed under OBC 2012 for up to 2 years from permit issuance (must be under construction by Jan 1, 2027).
- Phased permits: If a permit covers multiple buildings, all buildings must meet the code in force on the date of the first permit application for that phase.
- Alternative solutions: Continue to be permitted under Division A, but must now reference OBC 2024 objectives.
