The Fall of Empires: A Comprehensive Guide to the Units of Rome: Total War: Barbarian Invasion

When Rome: Total War: Barbarian Invasion was released in 2005, it shifted the tactical landscape from the structured legions of the Roman Republic to the chaotic, desperate twilight of the ancient world. Set during the Migration Period (circa 363–476 AD), this expansion focused on collapse, survival, and the rise of new kingdoms. Gone were the clean lines of Hastati and Triarii; in their place came a roster defined by heavy cavalry, warband charges, night raiders, and the crumbling armor of a dying empire.

Sarmatian Virgin Archers (Sarmatians): Fast horse archers with excellent stamina and missile attack stats. 🛡️ Best Faction Unit Rosters 1. The Huns The Huns rely on mobility and devastating horse archers.

The Western Roman Empire (WRE)

The WRE roster is a tragic reflection of a dying state. The legions of Caesar are gone, replaced by a mix of heavy defense and desperation.

Missile & Siege

Comitatenses: The standard professional heavy infantry of the late empire, better armored and defensive than earlier legionaries.
